Project: Run Day Nursery & Accompagnement Scolaire
Amount: Rs. 2,200.000 / Location: Quatre Bornes
About the Project
Our project is to help the most vulnerable mothers and children of 3 deprived urban areas of Quatre Bornes, namely Residences Pere Laval / Beau Sejour and Trefles with the Run Day nursery, so that they are able to work and have a place to leave their children in a secure environment.
As most of these mothers are below poverty line, we provide the children with nappies, breakfast, lunch, and a snack meal to both nursery infants and the students.
We aim at the young mothers (unmarried, separated, divorced, or where their partner is alcoholic, in drugs, or in prison etc). We want to allow them to have a job, work, become responsible parents/citizens, prevent them from scourges such as begging and prostitution, gain self respect, self valorization, and improve their living in a honest way, and better family relationships.
That's why we run a nursery for their young infants age 3 months to 3 yrs, where they can leave their child and work with peace of mind. 34 infants are actually safe in our program and reaping the benefits of being well framed by qualified caregivers, supervised play, accessing children's programs, we give free breakfast, lunch, snack meals, nappies etc, and the service is free of charge.
WE SEE TO IT THAT THE MOTHER WORKS...WE EMPOWER, WE DO NOT ASSIST.
We also support their children age 6 to 18 in their studies, (43 in all) by accompanying them in their homework (remedial classes) and do a lot of other activities (recreational, sports, arts, moral sessions) with them everyday from 16hrs to 18:15 in our centre with the help of nine teachers (coach and accompagnateurs). Those poor kids were in the streets after school, had a lot to catch up, had very bad results, and were exposed to all scourges.
Their parents cannot afford to pay private tuition for them, and cannot assist them in their studies being themselves not literate. We want to enhance the development of those poor children, facilitate their integration in the mainstream educational system to mitigate the adverse effects of their poor and deprived living conditions.
In 2011 and 2012, we supported two of them to pass their Certificate of Primary Education (CPE), out of 4. In 2013 seven sat for the same exams and ALL of them were successful. In 2014, four passed out of five, and in 2015, 3 passed out of 4. All those who passed are now in a college following their studies and most of them continue to attend tuition with us in the afternoon. The elder one who was a CPE failure is now in Form V, and took part in the Cambridge Exams this year. We give them a snack meal everyday when they attend, before starting classes. We issue ALL school materials free of charge. We also do theatre and music activities with them.
ALL OUR SERVICES ARE FREE OF CHARGE.
